Essential Tools for Effortless Gardening

Looking to fill up your garden shed but not sure where to start? We’ve compiled a list of five essential tools you’ll need for your first crack at growing a veggie garden. These are the ones you’ll be reaching for throughout your grow, to make sure you’re harvesting plants to be proud of.

Trowel – The humble garden trowel is the first tool you should pick up when building up your garden arsenal. Digging, mixing and moving the trowel does it all. It will get good use throughout the season for a variety of jobs. You’ll reach for it particularly at the start of the season when preparing your garden bed, mixing in compost and preparing holes for planting.

Gardening fork – A gardening fork is a useful tool for turning compost and aerating your soil. It is also used for lifting and dividing plants with minimal damage to any roots or bulbs. You will be reaching for your fork at the planting stage primarily for aerating soil and the adjustment of existing plants.

Weeder – Often overlooked, the weeder will make garden maintenance easy by letting you pull weeds without having to crawl around in your garden. This tool will be a staple all season as you regularly check your garden bed for weeds.

Rake – The rake is an important tool when preparing to plant your garden. Great for leveling soil, clearing debris from your garden beds and preparing seed beds for planting. The rake is invaluable in the home gardeners arsenal. The rake is another tool you’ll use pre planting, but also throughout the year, especially if the trees in your garden tend to make a mess.

Watering can – Depending on the size of the garden this might not be necessary but if you’re working with a small amount of space. A watering can will prevent the damage to smaller plants that you might risk with a hose. This tool is useful at the start of the planting season to hydrate the soil. You’ll also use it throughout to of course, water your plants.

With these five tools you’ll be set to get your first garden started. Newtons stocks a great range of garden tools.
