Fixing Soggy Lawn
Whilst we were expecting Spring to have ‘sprung’, it seems Winter wants to hang around for a little bit longer. If you need to fix a wet, muddy lawn area, read our top tips below:
- Aerate your lawn – soil compaction is one of the top reasons that lawns get wet, muddy and water logged. The compacted soil makes it difficult for water to pass through, and therefore harder to get nutrients down into the soil. This should be your first port of call when considering fixing a wet and muddy lawn.
- Where are your gutters going? Take stock of the water run off situation around your house. Ensure that there are no gutter downspouts flooding a particular area, and if they are – redirect the flow. This can be done by digging a shallow trench and extending the downspout with PVC pipe. We have a huge range of irrigation tools and pipes in store, view them here.
- Introduce a low cost storm drainage system to your yard – if you have concreted or tiled areas around the outside of your house, after a big storm you might see them covered in rain water. It’s important to have somewhere for this water to go so it doesn’t end up draining off into your lawn. The basic steps are:
- Dig trench
- Create proper slope
- Level soil
- Add gravel or geotextile
- Place the pipe
In store we have a range of 3m black plastic and stainless steel grates for your storm drainage system, as well as a range of round and square grates too.
- Dethatch – you may be familiar with the term, but if not, dethatching is the process of removing the dead grass and other debris from between your lawn and your soil. If there is significant build up, it can be difficult for the rain to drain through to the soil. You can use a dethatching machine, or a rake – if you’re not sure what to use, feel free to ask one of our friendly staff.
- If it comes to it, regrade your lawn – if you’ve exhausted your options, you may need to regrade your lawn. Sometimes a lawn that keeps gathering large amounts of water is due to the composition of the soil and the slope of your lawn. We recommend hiring a landscaper or professional to help regrade your lawn. The price will depend on the size of your lawn, among other factors. If you’d like advice, or a contact, Newton’s have a large network of landscapers in Adelaide available.
